I love wearing sandals and I'm lucky I live in a location that's warm year round. (S. its just Hollywood trying to make money. The reality is not that many people will go and see an Asian film if it is subtitled. apart from a few . Also its the reputation hong kong cinema built up in the past of reeling off kung fu film after kung fu film regardless of quality. Great as Jackie chan is some of his his early movies are shockers. its changed a bit since crouching tiger etc There is one thing i hate more than i's which is when Hollywood changes history to suit its needs. Particularly that film about the cracking of the german enigma code which in WW2. Hollywood made a fully accurate account of the events with one minor alteration. All the British characters were replaced by American characters. making America the hero of the "true" story and pissing on the accomplishments of the real life heroes. also they want to make a film about a fighter ace in the battle of britian staring ummmm tom cruise hmmm not about the actual british pilots then.

Because they don't have any good ideas so they are biting off our brilliant, creative storylines. They want the money and credit for the ideas. I myself didn't know some of those movies were remakes of Asian films.

I've always had a problem with Hollywood remaking Asian movies. It is because Hollywood can no longer come up with original ideas anymore (they are now even remaking old American movies). I much prefer the original movies to any remake. With the remakes of most Asian movies that Hollywood does it loses a lot of what makes it 'scary' I think.

Don't forget the re-remake of the Magnificent Seven, the purported remake of Lady Vengeance, and the constantly shelved and reshelved remake of Battle Royale. And they were even discussing remaking Park's Thirst (Bakjwi) before it was even shown outside of Korea. This is something I've kept up with myself. I'm a huge fan of Asian cinema, particulary Korean drama and I own a lot of the Asian films on your list. This is also a question I've asked before on this forum. I think that it boils down to a few things, Hollywood is low on ideas. You can see that in every aspect, from the way they remake Asian films to the way that they are apparently stuck on turning every comic book or whatever into a movie as well as old 80's shows like the A-Team. Also, Hollywood works on formulas. Movies like The Ring and The Departed brought in a lot of money. So, since those were remakes of Asian films, they are always on the lookout for the next Asian script to pilfer. Finally, let's not forget the current anime craze that's gripping young adults. More young adults than ever are into anime and Asian culture. Hollywood is seeking to captalize on that. What they don't realize is that the people who love these movies because they are into Asian culture would rather see the originals. They don't want to see these things watered down for American audiences, they don't want to see Zac Efron as Light, they want to see the original Japanese actors and actresses in the original settings. So, unless they somehow try to shield people from the original, it's doomed to fail anyway. EDIT: I actually don't have a problem with some of those remakes. Like I liked both Fistful of Dollars the Magnificent Seven because they were good adaptations, and not just stale remakes.

The one that makes my heart sink is the proposed re-make of Oldboy. Apparently, Spielberg's Dreamworks has the rights to the re-make and Will Smith is slated to appear in the Choi Min-sik role. I really, really can't see them keeping THAT plot twist in a Will Smith vehicle directed by Spielberg. A vanilla version of Oldboy would be an abomination. If anything, it's a Tarantino-crossed-with-David-Lynch spirit in the original.

It just ruins the original don't you think? And the worse part is pretty much 90% of the time our American producers don't even acknowledge that it was a remake of an Asian film to the public!! So basically the general population thinks that it's an american film and then have a misconception that Asian films are terrible or just "hai ya! ching chong kung fu fighting" when there is so much more! its just Hollywood trying to make money. The reality is not that many people will go and see an Asian film if it is subtitled. apart from a few . Also its the reputation hong kong cinema built up in the past of reeling off kung fu film after kung fu film regardless of quality. Great as Jackie chan is some of his his early movies are shockers. its changed a bit since crouching tiger etc There is one thing i hate more than i's which is when Hollywood changes history to suit its needs. Particularly that film about the cracking of the german enigma code which in WW2. Hollywood made a fully accurate account of the events with one minor alteration. All the British characters were replaced by American characters. making America the hero of the "true" story and pissing on the accomplishments of the real life heroes. also they want to make a film about a fighter ace in the battle of britian staring ummmm tom cruise hmmm not about the actual british pilots then.

Because they don't have any good ideas so they are biting off our brilliant, creative storylines. They want the money and credit for the ideas. I myself didn't know some of those movies were remakes of Asian films.

I've always had a problem with Hollywood remaking Asian movies. It is because Hollywood can no longer come up with original ideas anymore (they are now even remaking old American movies). I much prefer the original movies to any remake. With the remakes of most Asian movies that Hollywood does it loses a lot of what makes it 'scary' I think.

Don't forget the re-remake of the Magnificent Seven, the purported remake of Lady Vengeance, and the constantly shelved and reshelved remake of Battle Royale. And they were even discussing remaking Park's Thirst (Bakjwi) before it was even shown outside of Korea. This is something I've kept up with myself. I'm a huge fan of Asian cinema, particulary Korean drama and I own a lot of the Asian films on your list. This is also a question I've asked before on this forum. I think that it boils down to a few things, Hollywood is low on ideas. You can see that in every aspect, from the way they remake Asian films to the way that they are apparently stuck on turning every comic book or whatever into a movie as well as old 80's shows like the A-Team. Also, Hollywood works on formulas. Movies like The Ring and The Departed brought in a lot of money. So, since those were remakes of Asian films, they are always on the lookout for the next Asian script to pilfer. Finally, let's not forget the current anime craze that's gripping young adults. More young adults than ever are into anime and Asian culture. Hollywood is seeking to captalize on that. What they don't realize is that the people who love these movies because they are into Asian culture would rather see the originals. They don't want to see these things watered down for American audiences, they don't want to see Zac Efron as Light, they want to see the original Japanese actors and actresses in the original settings. So, unless they somehow try to shield people from the original, it's doomed to fail anyway. EDIT: I actually don't have a problem with some of those remakes. Like I liked both Fistful of Dollars the Magnificent Seven because they were good adaptations, and not just stale remakes.

The one that makes my heart sink is the proposed re-make of Oldboy. Apparently, Spielberg's Dreamworks has the rights to the re-make and Will Smith is slated to appear in the Choi Min-sik role. I really, really can't see them keeping THAT plot twist in a Will Smith vehicle directed by Spielberg. A vanilla version of Oldboy would be an abomination. If anything, it's a Tarantino-crossed-with-David-Lynch spirit in the original.
